- Always check Airway, Breathing, and Circulation first
1. Severe Bleeding
Steps:
Call for help:
Contact emergency services (999)
Apply pressure:
Use a clean cloth or bandage to apply direct pressure to the wound
Maintain pressure:
Keep pressure for 10-15 minutes without removing the cloth
Elevate:
If possible, raise the injured area above heart level
Apply tourniquet:
If bleeding doesn't stop, apply a tourniquet above the wound (for limbs only)
Monitor:
Check for signs of shock (pale, cold, sweating)
Position:
Lay patient flat with legs elevated (unless head injury)
2. Choking
For Conscious Adults:
Encourage coughing:
Ask patient to cough forcefully
Back blows:
Give 5 sharp blows between shoulder blades with heel of hand
Abdominal thrusts:
Perform 5 quick upward thrusts just above navel
Repeat:
Alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts until object is dislodged
Call emergency:
If unsuccessful after 1 minute, call 999
3. Unconsciousness
Steps:
Check responsiveness:
Tap shoulders and shout "Are you okay?"
Call emergency:
Contact 999 immediately
Check airway:
Open mouth, clear any obstructions
Check breathing:
Look, listen, feel for breathing (max 10 seconds)
Recovery position:
Place in recovery position (see Recovery Position page)
Monitor:
Continue monitoring breathing and pulse
CPR:
If not breathing, begin CPR if trained
4. Burns
Steps:
Stop burning:
Remove from heat source, extinguish flames
Cool burn:
Run cool (not cold) water over burn for 10-20 minutes
Remove jewelry:
Remove rings, bracelets before swelling occurs
Cover:
Use clean, dry cloth or sterile dressing
Pain relief:
Give paracetamol or ibuprofen if conscious
Elevate:
Raise burned area above heart level if possible
Seek help:
For severe burns (larger than 3cm or deep), call 999
5. Fractures and Sprains
RICE Protocol:
Rest:
Stop activity immediately
Ice:
Apply ice pack for 15-20 minutes (wrapped in cloth)
Compression:
Wrap with elastic bandage
Elevation:
Raise injured limb above heart level
Additional Steps:
Immobilize the injured area
Apply sling if arm is injured
For severe fractures, call 999
Do not move the injured limb
6. Shock
Signs of Shock:
Pale, cold, clammy skin
Rapid, weak pulse
Rapid, shallow breathing
Weakness or confusion
Nausea or vomiting
Treatment:
Call emergency:
Contact 999 immediately
Lay flat:
Position patient lying down
Elevate legs:
Raise legs 30cm above heart level
Keep warm:
Cover with blanket (not too hot)
Monitor:
Check pulse and breathing regularly
Do not:
Give food or drink
7. Poisoning/Overdose
Steps:
Call emergency:
Contact 999 immediately
Identify poison:
If possible, identify the substance
Remove source:
Move away from source of poison
Do not induce vomiting:
Unless specifically instructed
Position:
Place in recovery position if unconscious
Monitor:
Watch for changes in condition
Bring container:
Have poison container available for paramedics
When to Call 999:
Severe bleeding or uncontrolled bleeding
Difficulty breathing or no breathing
Chest pain or pressure
Severe allergic reaction
Loss of consciousness
Suspected poisoning or overdose
Severe burns
Suspected fractures of spine or neck
Severe head, chest, or abdominal injuries
Any life-threatening emergency
